Why the rate is not built in
The EU VAT Directive provides the common framework, while each Member State sets and applies rates within it. The European Commission says national tax-authority websites are the most reliable source for the current rate on a particular product. Silver bars and collectible or legal-tender coins can also be treated differently, so the calculator keeps the VAT input editable.
Silver and investment gold are treated differently
The VAT Directive contains a specific exemption for qualifying investment gold. Articles 344 and 346 define qualifying bars, wafers and coins and normally exempt their supply, intra-EU acquisition and import. The Directive does not create the same general investment-metal exemption for silver. This is why a physical silver quote can carry a significant tax component while qualifying investment gold may not.
Margin schemes and advertised prices
Special margin rules can apply to certain second-hand goods, collectors’ items and eligible dealer transactions. A margin-scheme listing is not the same as applying a VAT percentage to the full metal value. Ask the seller for the final delivered price and invoice treatment rather than inferring tax solely from the product name.
Cross-border purchases and vaulted metal
Delivery destination, seller arrangements, customer status and whether metal is withdrawn can affect the analysis. Professional vaulting may avoid an immediate retail delivery, but it should not be treated as automatically tax-free. Check the provider’s storage location, ownership structure, withdrawal rules and the law that applies to you.
